SOME BRIDGE STATS Pass 59.4 One-Level opener Strong two

1.8 Notrump The
most productive modern tool in bridge is the
weak-two opener. Take this hand for instance: ª 7 2 Playing-strong two openers, there is nothing to
be done but pass. However it is my experience that
the risk of opening a weak 2©
here is nil and the compelling stat is that you get
to open almost five more hands per hundred when you
adopt these bids. There is no other convention in
bridge that produces such a huge benefit. There is
a cost however: you have to learn two conventions,
weak-twos and the two-club convention (which
replaces natural strong two openers). It is interesting to note the impact of five-card
majors. One-level openers occur some 36% of the
time (14.6 plus 21.6). The five-card requirement
for majors forces you to open minors more often. NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION (Belated)
I hate geriatric jokes, so this is it!
“Learn from the mistakes of others. You won’t live long
enough to make them all yourself.” Alfred Sheinwold
“I favor light opening bids. When you’re my age, you’re
never sure that the bidding will get back around to you in
time.” Oswald Jacoby.
