 CRUISING THE SEVEN SEAS

Marian and I went cruising most of April - well not all seven seas but we went from Tampa through the Gulf of Mexico, across the Atlantic, into the Mediterranean and finally the Adriatic to Venice.  Ports of call were the Azores, Cadiz and Barcelona in Spain, Monaco, Civitaveccia Italy, Dubrovnik Croatia, and Venice.  As you should anticipate, it was a bridge cruise where I lectured in the mornings and directed duplicate bridge in the afternoons when the ship was not in port, 11 days total.  Judging by the attendance, it was an outstanding success - 30 to 35 people every morning and 40+ in the afternoons.

You might wonder about how I could entertain so may bridge players every morning  for 11 days - and so did I, that is until I got a sense of what interested them the first day.  All were intensely interested in the bidding system concepts of “Standard American 21”, so the lectures came easily.

SPIRIT OF AMERICA

If you have not heard of Spirit of America, I would like to introduce you to this organization.  It is non-profit dedicated to helping Americans (both military and civilians) serving abroad to assist people in need, specifically in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa.  They provide hospital and school supplies, gifts for children, sports equipment, sewing machines, and many other items to help local people toward a better life.  Their source of funding is private sector (individual) contributions only.  Take a minute to look up their web site: www.spiritofamerica.net.
