A SNAP CONTRACT
Here is any easy deal. Well maybe! East is
dealer.
WEST EAST
S) A542 S) 7 H) AQ5 H) KJ1098 D) KJ7 D) A63 C) K93 C) AQJ10
Just for the exercise, how would you bid these
hands? East has 17 points and West has 17
points. This adds up to slam but 16-17 opposite
16-17 are often the hardest to bid slam. In
spite of the flat hand, West is good enough to
jump-shift after East opens 1 heart. That
should get you to a small slam.
Of course 4NT is Blackwood. Making this slam is
easy. But say you were more aggressive and
landed in 7 hearts. You are declarer East and
South leads the spade king. How would you play
it? Take some time to think about it before
reading on to find out how clever I am.
There are 12 tricks off the top. You could
finesse diamonds for the 13th for a 50-50
chance. However you can get better odds
elsewhere. Play this as a dummy reversal. Take
the spade ace and ruff a spade. Draw two rounds
of trump, ending in dummy. If trump splits 3-2
you are home free. Ruff two more hearts then
draw the last trump with dummy’s ace. However,
if trump splits 4-1 you will have to fall back
on the diamond finesse. You have increased your
odds to about 80%.
